Within a large city greenbelt sits a small play area with a global view. Robert Mowat Associates designed this playground with a safety play surface that accurately depicts the entire world map laid flat across its length. The map was laid out using a colored string layout system and tracing the continents from a detailed plan view prepared by the firm. Following the layout, the play paving installers closely followed the outlines by troweling in the play surfacing as a liquid mix onto the template outlines. A curving concrete seat wall separates the street area from the play area. The precast wall serves as play, education and seating. It includes identification of major capitals on three continents. The wall serves a dual purpose acting as both a play element for climbing, balancing and jumping and hints to our worlds geography.
