Alvarado Boulevard from Smith Street to the Fremont City limits is Union City’s first endeavor to install a Bay Friendly landscape in a public ROW median. The design achieved success through a vigoruous Bay Friendly Association scorecard analysis and the award of a $15,000.00 grant. The median design applies sustainable landscape techniques by utilizing recycled materials in concrete and steel and applying post consumer compost soil amendments to cardboard sheet mulching. Plantings are 90% California natives and achieve a variety of biodiversity benefits for bird, butterfly and insect habitat. Irrigation was designed within strict standards as outlined in Bay Friendly standards. Water use is based on “smart” irrigation technology providing remote application and weather based scheduling. Erosion and weed control utilize the latest in post consumer and biodegradable products.
